Proposed appropriation change: Reserve Energy and Emergency Measures [Closing date: 2008/07/02 12:00:00 GMT+12]

The Commission proposes funding potential 2008/09 costs through an increase in the Reserve Energy and Emergency Measures appropriation, ranging between $55 million and $165 million.

The Commission requires additional funding for the running of Whirinaki and may require additional funding for reserve energy contracts and/or a public conservation campaign. The proposed appropriation increase for fuel for Whirinaki is between $55 million and $110 million.

On 20 June 2008, the Commission released a request for proposal (RFP) for reserve energy options in the form of reduced electricity consumption, or additional generation supply. The Commission is proposing an appropriation change of up to $50 million to cover the cost of reserve energy that may be procured if needed, as a result of this process.

Additional funding of up to $5 million may be required by the Commission for a public conservation campaign later in the year. This includes the costs associated with campaign preparation and operation.

The Commission invites submissions on the Reserve Energy and Emergency Measures appropriation change proposal by 12pm on 2 July 2008. Please send them to info@electricitycommission.govt.nz with “Appropriation proposal for reserve energy” in the subject header or post to:
