Frequently asked questions - electricity efficiency

Does the Commission tell me how to conserve electricity?

Not directly. That is a primary duty of electricity retailers. However, the Commission has an important role in promoting and facilitating the efficient use of electricity by working with industry groups, electricity companies and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).

The Commission seeks to identify ways for electricity efficiency to contribute cost-effectively to the government’s electricity objectives, and estimate the level of investment required to meet that potential.

Why is the Commission charged with promoting electricity efficiency?

Electricity efficiency has the potential to provide low-cost reduction or deferment of the need for expansion of existing generation and transmission capacities, as well as contributing to New Zealand's wider environmental objectives. Accordingly, the Commission is in the process of initiating a number of pilot programmes to deliver energy savings.
