Commission's electricity efficiency programmes

The Commission has three electricity efficiency programmes.

  • The Efficient Lighting Programme. The electricity efficiency potentials study highlighted lighting, as the single biggest area of potential savings. This programme operates across all sectors, and focuses on achieving the key objectives of the New Zealand Efficient Lighting Strategy pdf [742 KB] announced by the Minister of Energy in 2008.
  • The Commercial Buildings Programme. These programmes are designed to provide financial assistance to businesses for electricity efficiency programmes that include measures such as upgrading to more efficient lighting, installing or replacing inefficient HVAC systems, installing and upgrading building management and refrigeration systems, and installing monitoring and targeting systems.  The programmes allow businesses to apply for part-funding from the Commission for electricity efficiency projects where there is a current barrier preventing such projects from proceeding.
  • The Industrial Sector Programme. The current focus of this programme is on achieving savings from improving the electricity efficiency of motorized systems in industry. It includes a motors bounty scheme (to assist replacement of older low-efficiency electric motors) and a compressed air systems efficiency programme aimed at embedding ‘best-practice’ into the management of compressed air systems in industry.
