This report describes the power systems analysis undertaken for the Initial SOO by SSG.  This was a preliminary load flow analysis of the New Zealand power system covering a 20-year horizon from 2005-2025 for each of the five generation scenarios considered in the Initial SOO.  The analysis examined the capability of the power system to supply the forecast winter peak.  The analysis at this stage is necessarily limited and based on assumptions, some of which require further investigation. Other factors not considered in this initial analysis include dry-year impacts, summer-peak impacts, the feasibility of a number of the investment options identified, and risks in system operation.  Due to the compressed timeframe for the production of this Initial SOO the analysis was of an indicative nature and made no attempt to optimise the development of the transmission system.  The analysis considered the main transmission network and ignored the need for augmentations on spur networks or supply transformers.
