Dispatchable Demand

The Dispatchable Demand project is one of the priority projects of the Market Development Programme (MDP). The ability of demand-side participants to respond actively to wholesale electricity market conditions is an important component of an efficient wholesale market. While there are existing mechanisms in place to encourage this response, several policy problems have been identified with these arrangements. A dispatchable demand regime offers on way of addressing these policy problems.

Consultation

The Commission has published a Dispatchable Demand – Options Consultation Paper, which considers four high level dispatchable demand options. 17 submissions were received.

The Commission held a conference to provide an overview of the MDP consultation documents and an opportunity for industry participants to discuss the options.

Based on the submissions on the Dispatchable Demand - Options consultation the Commission has developed a more detailed proposal and published the Dispatchable Demand regime consultation paper on 20 May 2010. 16 submissions were received.

Next steps

Depending on submissions the Commission proposes futher developing the proposal and handing the implementation over the Electricity Authority
